If the CodeMaster were set out to kill anyone who sinned, he'd be waiting outside, waiting in front of a church, hunting those down who confess a sin to the priest.

To me it seems he has further reason to hold Eric captive...

Oh, and of course - if Eric were dead, the Taylor family would have any reason to hunt the CodeMaster down. There'd be no restraint.
